”Think Nobu-meets-Noma, via the rich Icelandic fishing grounds of the North Atlantic” – Hotel Seeker
The cuisine at Torfhús Retreat is largely inspired by Icelandic traditions and local ingredients.
We are fortunate to be located in an area of ample geothermal heat, and therefore have numerous greenhouse farms to source our vegetables and seasonal produce from. We strive to use local Icelandic ingredients whenever available. All meals at Torfhús Retreat are served in the Viking Langhús.
Icelandic breakfast is served from 07:00 – 10:00, freshly baked pastries, delicious overnight oats, smoked arctic char and local cheeses dominate the setting. At lunch and into the afternoon we serve a complimentary rich soup of the day and bread for our guests. The soups are all vegetarian and rotate from day to day. When evening comes at Torfhús Retreat we offer a variety of different dinner culinary experiences ranging from set menus to an unknown journey through the Icelandic cuisine.
All dinner experiences must be reserved one day in advance.
Dinner is on demand and not included in the accommodation price.
BASALT STONE HOT POOL
Iceland has a rich tradition of bathing in geothermal pools, powered by sustainable energy. The multiple uses for the warm geothermal water are believed to be one of the deciding factors for settling down in this rigid environment. This source of energy was persistently used for bathing throughout centuries by Icelandic people. In Icelandic sagas bathing in natural stone hot pools consistently appears. The basalt stone hot pools are Torfhús Retreat´s attempt to bring this rejuvenating tradition of bathing to our guests.
The Northern lights sometimes referred to as Aurora Borealis or in Icelandic Norðurljós are a phenomenom of a display in the sky of green lights every so often turning pink. This natural occurance can be seen in Iceland from September to late March. Torfhús Retreat is a prime location to experience the Aurora Borealis due to its position in the country side of Iceland, isolated from the light pollution associated with city lights. Stargazing on a cold winter night from your own warm geothermally heated basalt stone pool is an truly precious moment.
